  • Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide, responsible for nearly 10 million deaths in 2020, or nearly 1 in 6 deaths globally (WHO).

  • The most common types of cancer globally are:

    • Breast cancer

    • Lung cancer

    • Colorectal cancer

    • Prostate cancer

    • Stomach cancer

  • Around 30–50% of cancers are preventable through lifestyle changes such as avoiding tobacco, maintaining a healthy diet, staying physically active, and reducing alcohol intake.

  • Tobacco use is the single largest preventable cause of cancer, responsible for approximately 22% of cancer deaths.


Cancer in India

 

  • India sees over 1.4 million new cancer cases each year, with the numbers steadily rising.

  • Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in India, while oral and lung cancers are most common among men.

  • A significant percentage of cancer patients in India are diagnosed at advanced stages, due to lack of awareness and limited access to early detection.
